About
Gemma R. Gonçalves da Silva
Gemma R. Gonçalves da Silva was born in Rome in 1971, where she lives and works, carrying the Portuguese roots of her mother’s family: she signs her photographs with her mother’s surname. Largely self-taught, she has refined her language in workshops with Italian and international photographers.
She started with travel and performing arts photography; in 2015 she fell in love with fashion and beauty. Since then she has published over a hundred editorials in international magazines such as Ellements, Elysium, Figgi and Marika, while her travel stories have appeared in Marika Magazine – Nature & Travel and The Fox Magazine.
Since 2017 she has been the photographer of CaraDonna, now La Versione di Eva: nearly a thousand portraits of women writing a message for other women on their own bodies. With the Caradonna Collective she also created Radici, Feel Rouge, Parola di Donna and Chronos & Synchrony. In 2024 she won first prize at the Italian national photography competition “Non solo 8 marzo”.
For her, photography is a way of saying how she sees things: every project starts as a mood board and becomes real through iron organisation, passion and stubbornness.
